Pest Control in Horizon City, TX
Horizon City sits up on the mesa southeast of El Paso and grew fast, with subdivision after subdivision spreading along Horizon Blvd., Darrington Rd. and Eastlake Blvd. Most homes are newer slab builds with stucco walls, rock front yards and block wall backyards. A lot of them have open desert between one phase and the next, and some have it right over the back wall.
The ground is sandy mesa covered in creosote and mesquite. It drains fast, it blows around every spring, and it's home to scorpions, harvester ants, pack rats and black widows. Every new street that gets graded pushes some of them toward the houses already there.
Sand drifts, tumbleweeds and the garage door seal
Spring wind on the mesa is something else. It blows sand and tumbleweeds against block walls and garage doors, and over a couple of seasons that grit wears the bottom seal right down. Check the garage door seal every spring and shovel out sand that drifts against the base of the walls. Black widows love those drifts and the back corners of the garage, so wear gloves when you clean.
Young yards cut both ways. There's less clutter for pests to hide in, which helps. But there's nothing growing yet to break the wind, so the sand and tumbleweeds pile up against walls and give scorpions cover. Clear those piles after a windy week. And look at what's on the other side of the back wall. If it's open desert, the last row of homes is going to see more scorpions and pack rats than the houses two streets in, no matter how tidy the yard is. Scorpions are still the top call out here, and a scorpion exterminator for mesa homes treats block walls, rock beds and the garage line.
Harvester ant circles in a brand-new gravel yard
Harvester ants love open, sunny gravel, which describes about half the front yards in Horizon City. They clear big bare circles around their mounds and they sting hard, so kids and dogs find them fast. Crickets come in from the open lots too. A recurring perimeter pest service handles both, and plenty of new owners set one up in the first year while the next phase is still being built.
Pack rats and mice show up when nights cool off. Store pet food in sealed bins and ask about pack rat removal near open desert if you find stick piles by the wall. New homes often got a pre-construction termite treatment, but it doesn't last forever, so a termite check on a newer home is worth asking about after a few years.
Down the hill to the west, Eastside neighborhoods past Loop 375 see the same new-build pattern. South toward the river, Socorro's farm fields bring more mice and mosquitoes.

Questions We Get
Does my new Horizon City home need termite protection?
Many new builds got a pre-construction treatment, but it wears off. Ask the company to check what was done and whether it's time for an inspection.
